These scenes were part, along with two other series of views and bullfighting, of a screen or panel commissioned by George William Frederick Villiers (1800-1870), Earl of Clarendon -represented in this same collection in a portrait by Federico de Madrazo-, during his stay in the Spanish capital as British ambassador.
Half of these scenes feature a single figure, the other half two or, in some cases, three. All of them, except for the Maragato, are set outdoors and most of them include buildings in the background or in the background that helped the artist to compose the scenes with verisimilitude. To paint the types Villaamil was inspired, to a great extent, by the engraved repertoires of Spanish costumes.
The set was auctioned after being restored and divided into two panels (lots 771 and 772) at the Sala Alcalá on December 23, 2020, where they were acquired by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation.
