This work by the photographer Manuel Sonseca from Madrid was part of the exhibition organised as part of PhotoEspaña 2014 entitled “El Viaje. Sendero Vital” (“The Journey. Sendero vital” (“The Journey. Vital Path”), where a group of authors come together who had met over thirty years before at the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid. The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation acquired a set of photographs for this project. Each one presents their unique perspective of this group adventure with different natural, cultural and social scenes captured on the road between 1982 and 2012, making up a broad spectrum of contrasts in black and white.

The images by Manuel Sonseca usually pause on fleeting moments, especially in these scenes from the trip, which seem to recover the essence of the great masters of North American photography in the first half of the 20th century. Despite being taken recently, the image seems to speak of a more distant past, with that van which has stopped in a sort of shoulder delocalised in earlier times. Melancholy, nostalgia, metaphysical solitude and poetic intensity define the classical mark of this veteran artist.
