This complex installation by Hannah Collins is comprised of a series of photographs, a sound archive and an artist’s book which pay tribute to the famous African-American artist Noah Purifoy (1917–2004), the co-founder of the Watts Towers Art Center and the creator of the Noay Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, a complex of sculptures, assemblages and installations which he developed in California from 1989 until the year of his death. Collins used this unique location in the Mojave Desert to develop an original work which is not only a tribute to the artist but also designed to be a truly contemplative and auditory experience. The pictures were taken with an analogical camera in silver emulsion, and the three sound channels play stories by personalities who were Purifoy’s contemporaries, such as Ed Ruscha, and by several artists’ cooperatives related to the radical social activism which developed in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s.
