“La obra invitada” program aimed to bring to the Museo de Bellas Artes de Asturias several art pieces from private collectors or other national and international institutions during three months. The reinforced the speech of the permanent collection.

The First Art piece in 2015 was “La Virgen con el niño” (ca. 1660-1665) painted by the Andalusian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (Sevilla, 1617 – Cadiz, 1682) and lent for the occasion by the Fundación  Maria Cristina Masaveu Peterson, management of the Colección Masaveu, one of the principal private collections of art in Spain. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is one of the great names of Spanish painting of the Modern age.

The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson, is Manager of the Colección  Masaveu, one of the best private collections of art in Spain. Bartolomé  Esteban Murillo is one of the great names of Spanish Painting of the Modern Age. He belonged to the second generation of masters of the Baroque; his success was based primarily on his personal treatment of religious subjects. In these paintings he fused the Italian and Flemish elements with the Hispanic tradition.

The picture of “Virgen con el niño”, also known as the Madonna Masaveu, is a magnificent production. It was painted at the first maturity of the author, it is a work characterized for an appropriate simplicity and an unique attraction. It is based on the harmony of the characters, the soft expression and in the deep color  of the clothes of the Virgin. In general, the sense of severity stands mixed with sweetness and direct gaze to the viewer of mother and son.

This Art piece, whose creation has an unknown circumstance, got a great fame, because there is  a dozen copies and versions, of which the Masaveu canvas would be the original model.
