The diptych Shipwreck belongs to the 1999 series Naufragios y Tormentas (Shipwrecks and Storms), one of the last ones the painter made, which also focuses on a theme that remained with him his entire life: a boat on the sea. The painter felt attracted by the sea, which he viewed as a dramatic, philosophical, romantic place associated with tragedy.

Here Claramunt once again uses the canvas as the backdrop, this time dominated by a mass of nervous black lines which cluster in the centre of the composition. They create the shape of a drifting boat during a furious storm, conveyed with thick red, green and purple lines to represent all the power of nature to the viewer. The dribbled paint, which reveals the speed and intensity with which this painting was made, also serves as a premonitory symbol of tragedy.

This piece was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson along with others by the same artist in the Juana de Aizpuru Gallery (Madrid) in January 2020.
