The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation has received the Gold Medal from the Ophthalmological Institute for its long-standing contribution to the work of the Ophthalmological Research Foundation (FIO).

In pursuit of excellence within the research field, since the beginning of 2009 the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, along with the Ophthalmological Research Foundation (FIO), has provided sponsorship and has collaborated towards the development and implementation of several ocular research projects, as well as the development and implementation of scientific knowledge, through the Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute’s Visual Science Research Unit.

Ongoing research encompasses different fields of visual science such as the development of experimental models of ocular diseases, the molecular basis of ophthalmological diseases, external eye diseases, such as dry eye syndrome and neurotrophic disease and retinal diseases, such as macular degeneration.

On 23 December 2013, the president of the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation, Fernando Masaveu, collected the Gold Medal from the Ophthalmological Institute, presented by Dr Luis Fernández-Vega.  In the past this award has been granted to TRH The Prince and Princess of Asturias, the University of Oviedo and Dr Barraquer.
