Lost, solitary or abandoned places that hold so many memories – like this North Station (Príncipe Pío) – are the compositional axis in the recent works by Primož Bizjak, who photographic quality come together with an almost performative approach to this working methodology. This work was acquired by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation at the 2014 International Contemporary Art Fair (ARCO) in Madrid to supplement its contemporary art collection.

The image captured in the Spanish capital, where Bizjak often resides, perfectly contrasts this location with its metaphysical composition, symmetry and interplay of light. It takes advantage of the Northwest-facing spaces and architecture of this station which was opened in 1882, to then be ravaged by the Spanish Civil War and finally closed in 1993. The photograph was part of several exhibitions in Spain and Germany under the title “Hotel Bristol”, which also included images of Sarajevo and Venice, where the Slovenian artist explores the history of symbolic places and spaces, using long exposure and devoting many hours to his pursuit of atmospheres where light appears to be contained, capturing natural colours from original perspectives.
