This work was one of the last made by Javier del Río in his studio in Somió shortly before his death. It is a cityscape, probably of Gijón or its surroundings, a recurring motif in his oeuvre. Over a neutral background, it shows a partial view of a roof in the foreground and two tall freestanding, separate buildings in the middle ground. The blurred nature of the composition, coupled with the predominance of ochre tones, contribute to give the space a kind of phantasmagorical or dreamlike feel, which is common in Javier del Río’s works, which are predominated by places for memory which evoke the artist’s experiences, recollections and feelings.
From the ATM Gallery in Gijón, this painting joined the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Collection in 2019.
