60 YEARS OF THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR OF ASTURIAS

COMMEMORATIVE PUBLICATION AND RESEARCH PROJECT

On the occasion of the 60th edition of the International Trade Fair of Asturias (FIDMA), a publishing project was undertaken to showcase art meant to disseminate business and trade fair culture through the artistic expressions found on the posters published during the fair’s 60 editions.

The Casa Masaveu’s association with the International Trade Fair of Asturias dates back to its origins and has been strengthened with the presence of the Sociedad Anónima Tudela Veguín pavilion in the fairgrounds. Every edition, the Corporación Masaveu has organised exhibitions in this pavilion on a variety of themes with a meticulous selection of artworks from the Masaveu Collection, a tradition that continues today. Juan de Arellano, El Greco, Murillo, Picasso, Barceló, Evaristo Valle, Sorolla, Zuloaga and Dalí are just some of the artists whose pieces have been displayed throughout the different editions of the fair. The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson, the heir to the Casa Masaveu tradition and faithful to the commitment to patronage of its founder, María Cristina Masaveu, partners with commemorative activities promoted by the Gijón Chamber of Commerce as a way of acknowledging and supporting this important work.

The book Feria Internacional de Muestras de Asturias. Historia gráfica 1924-2016 (International Trade Fair of Asturias. Graphic History 1924–2016), co-published by two institutions, the Gijón Chamber of Commerce and the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson, is a compilation of the graphic and iconographic history within the business, economic, social and cultural context of the International Trade Fair of Asturias over its more than 60 years of history. The original works on each poster, as well as other graphics and documents from each edition, appeared in the exhibition FIDMA 60 Editions. Images, a show held at the Palacio Revillagigedo Cultural Centre in Gijón last summer which featured works by such renowned artists as Mariano Moré, Isaac del Rivero, Melquiades Álvarez and Joaquín Rubio Camín.
