This work by the Manchegan photographer Ángel Sanz belonged to the exhibition organised as part of PhotoEspaña 2014 entitled “El viaje. Sendero vital” (“The Journey. Vital Path”), where a group of authors come together who had met over thirty years before at the Royal Photographic Society of Madrid. The María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation acquired a set of photographs for this project. Each one presents their unique perspective of this group adventure with different natural, cultural and social scenes captured on the road between 1982 and 2012, making up a broad spectrum of contrasts in black and white.

The town of Torreira is located in a beautiful natural landscape surrounded by its river and the Atlantic Ocean, with endless sandy areas preserved by incredible dunes. A clearly marine environment that Ángel Sanz converts into an unusual image, extrapolated to areas of the world, or even to somewhat lunar latitudes, combining the contrasts of light and shadow. The lone cyclist seems to emulate the films of Vittorio de Sica or the nearby villages that Bardem and Berlanga synthesised in the aesthetic heritage of French photographic impressionism or postwar Italian neorealism translated here to the 1990.
