Paisaje rural

TECHNICAL DATA

Author: Agustín Riancho (Entrambasmestas, Cantabria, 1841 – Ontaneda, Cantabria, 1929)
Title: Paisaje rural (rural landscape)
Year: 1875
Technique: oil on canvas
Size: 73,5 x 104 cm

Just like the other two works by Riancho in the collection, this painting is representative of the artist’s mature period in Belgium, when he was in contact with the modernising landscape trends influenced by the French realist painters. All three works depict similar motifs: a village on the banks of a river with several waterborne vessels, and trees dominating the compositions. He depicts several small figures, with average canon of proportion and somewhat static, as was common in his artistic output.

The palette, in which grey, ochre and greenish tones predominate, also includes the presence of the dark tones and black that were so common in his paintings, which are also brightened by lighter colours on small surfaces.

This work was acquired at the auction held at Fernando Durán on 4 and 5 April 2017 (lot 880).
