The last picture painted by the late artist from Gijón was presented at the “Entre Arte II” (“Between Art II”) exposition (Centro Cultural Cajastur Palacio Revillagigedo, Gijón, 2007) and the retrospective exposition “La búsqueda de un sueño Javier del Río (1952-2004)” (“The Pursuit of a Dream. Javier del Río (1952-2004)”) (Centro de Cultura Antiguo Instituto y Museo Evaristo Valle Evaristo Valle, Gijón, 2012) where the catalogue raisonné of all his works was presented, which was created and curated by the María Cristina Masaveu Peterson Foundation.

Landscape scenery took a major leap in the last stage of the life of Javier del Río, who constantly painted his hometown, creating countless pictures that surprise viewers far and wide. The synthesis of this final stage is found in this evocative, large-format painting – probably unfinished – which rested on its easel at the time of the artist’s untimely death. This beautiful fabric of a revived Gijón – symbolising the reincarnation of Javier del Río in his perennial experiential landscape – is able to illuminate every step of this long journey, the portrait is an example and stimulus for a life dedicated to sharing emotions with full creative freedom.
