Feria en Salamanca

TECHNICAL DATA

Author: Francisco Iturrino (Santander, 1864 – Cagnes-Sur-Mer-Francia, 1924)
Title: Feria en Salamanca / Fair in Salamanca
Year:circa 1898 or later
Technique: oil on canvas
Size: 72,5 x 93,5 cm

After having lived in Liege, Brussels and Paris, Iturrino spent some time in Ledesma (Salamanca) in 1898. There, attracted by the vitality of rural scenes, he cultivated animal motifs, just as he continued to do later in Seville. Livestock fairs became one of his subjects.

In the background, you can see the Roman bridge, and on the left above the village are the towers of La Clerecía church, the cathedral and San Esteban convent. The centre of the composition is energetically defined by the three horses. The blue, red and yellow brushstrokes vigorously outline the animals’ musculature, especially the one that is foreshortened. The cummerbund of the man standing among the horses also boasts bright colours. However, the ground, in light almost pinkish ochre tones, is like a two-dimensional plane, common to the Synthetist painting the artist had become familiar with in France. The figures of the livestock farmers, painted swiftly, totally fill the middle ground of the scene.

This painting was acquired at the Galería Jorge Juan in Madrid in April 2018.
