The Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson is organising a lecture series entitled Other Perspectives: Film, Writing and Photography in Twentieth-century Spanish Art, which will take place from 14 to 18 April at the FMCMP Madrid Centre. The themes of the lectures are related to the exhibition Masaveu Collection. Twentieth-Century Spanish Art: From Picasso to Barceló, which brings together the top one hundred works from that century in the Masaveu Collection.

Accompanying the exhibition, this third series invites reflection on other arts, beyond painting and sculpture, that emerged in Spain during the twentieth century.

The series commences on 14 April with the lecture A Manual for Art and Life: Film, Culture and Modernity in Spain, 1953–1973, in which Fernando Ramos, a senior lecturer in the Art History Department at the Complutense University of Madrid, will discuss the role of film in the construction of a modern visual culture in Spain during the central decades of the twentieth century.

On 21 April, Irene García Chacón, who holds a PhD in Art History from the Complutense University of Madrid, will deliver a lecture entitled Of Paintbrushes and Pens: Fragmentary Reflections on Writings by Twentieth-century Spanish Artists, in which she will analyse artists’ texts and writings as a space for reflecting on artistic practice and aesthetic theory.

The series will end on 28 April with Spanish Women Photographers of the Twentieth Century: From Eulalia Abaitua to Cristina García Rodero. On this occasion, María de los Santos García Felguera will chart the careers of some of leading female figures on Spain’s photography scene in the twentieth century.

The lectures will take place in the María Cristina Masaveu Auditorium at the FMCMP Madrid Centre, commencing at 7.15 pm and with free admission on a first come, first served basis. Invitations can be collected at the Foundation’s ticket office from one hour before the start of each lecture, although a portion will be available for pre-booking through the website.
