Organised by ACE (Acción Cultural Española) in collaboration with Europalia España and Bozar, the exhibition Luz y sombra: Goya and Spanish Realism pays tribute to one of the central figures of Spanish art and explores his influence on subsequent Spanish art.

After analysing the artist’s oeuvre in the first few sections of the show, the curators then examine his legacy within the Spanish realist tradition through the work of more than seventy Spanish artists from different generations who, from the eighteenth century to the present day, establish a dialogue with Goya on the milestones and transformations that have marked the country’s recent history.

The project therefore invites reflection on the “question of Spain”, on how Spanish culture has been understood both within and outside the country, and on how, through Goya’s work, Spanish art collectively responds to moments of crisis and transformation, forging bridges between heritage and contemporary creation.
