La teula roja

TECHNICAL DATA

Author: Juana Francés (Alicante, 1924–Madrid, 1990)
Title: The Red Tile
Year: 1960
Technique: mixed media on canvas
SIze: 190 x 170 cm

Made in 1960, La Teula Roja (The Red Tile) is clearly representative of Juana Francés’s Informalist period (1956–1963). This type of painting, which Francés made directly on the canvas on the floor, tends to have a large blotch of paint, made in this case—as was common in her output during this period—with a mixture of sand, superimposed on a series of broad, gestural black and red lines and later “sprinkled” with a stream of water. Likewise, the white and bluish grey in the background, which are particularly visible on the upper part, contribute to giving the composition a kind of depth.

This work was acquired by the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson at Subastas Durán on 30 January 2020 (lot 172).
